American Heart Month Nutrition Education Resources

Happy American Heart Month! When you think of hearts in February, you might be thinking about candy hearts and valentines. But did you know that February is American Heart Month?

For over 50 years, dietitians, other health professionals, and national organizations have been taking time in February to spread the word about heart disease and heart health. Unfortunately, heart disease is one of the biggest health threats for Americans. The good news is, most cases can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle which includes healthful eating.

A heart healthy diet is based on plant foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It includes healthy fats like olive oil, avocados and oily fish, lean proteins and low fat or fat free dairy, and is low in saturated and trans fats, sodium and added sugar. While it may seem like kids don’t have to worry about heart disease, it’s never too early to help them learn how to keep their hearts healthy. After all, we only get one heart, so it’s important to take care of it!

Nutrition From the Hart is celebrating American Heart Month with a number of brand new heart themed nutrition activities and resources. These education tools are designed to teach and reinforce heart healthy eating. Enjoy!

  1. I’ve used just about all of your resources in my 3rd grade classroom and they LOVE them. Especially the fortune tellers. Thank you for all of your hard work!
